Gastroentology and Hepatology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Reşat Memişoğlu from Gayrettepe Florence Nighingale Hospital drew attention to the importance of protecting liver health.'The risk of liver disease is very common in our society. The most prominent cause of this disease is alcohol and viral hepatitis, while obesity is the most common cause recently.” Memişoğlu emphasized the importance of protecting liver health.

'Liver is the Factory of the Body'

Referring to the importance of the liver, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Resat Memişoğlu said, “The liver is the largest organ in the body. It is the body's factory and has more than 500 functions. It absorbs nutrients and serves to remove harmful substances from the blood. It plays a role in fighting infections; breaks down food to produce energy; makes and regulates many hormones, enzymes, proteins and stores iron, vitamins and other chemicals. It is one of the amazing organs in the body and is vital for sustaining our lives, which is why you need to take good care of your liver. Listing the risk factors to be aware of in the development of liver disease, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Reşat Memişoğlu said, “These factors include type 2 diabetes, hypertension, alcohol, obesity, history of viral infections such as hepatitis B or C, history of blood transfusion before 1986, history of unprotected sexual intercourse.

Symptoms of Liver Disease

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Memişoğlu gave information about the symptoms of liver disease. “Among the symptoms of liver disease are fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, muscle loss, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, insomnia, red palms, easy bruising, itching, yellow eyes, yellow skin, white nails, swelling of the legs and feet, dark urine, pale stools, easy bleeding, menstrual irregularities in women, trembling of the hands and confusion in advanced cases,” he said.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Memişoğlu said, “The warnings you should avoid yourself are in these 10 suggestions” and listed the warnings you should avoid as follows.

1. Do not use alcohol, even in small amounts.
2. Stay away from smoking.
3. Avoid unprotected sexual intercourse.
4. Stop unhealthy drinks and snacks.
5. Do not share personal belongings.
6. Beware of fizzy sprays.
7. Avoid infections.
8. Avoid stress whenever possible.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Memişoğlu also listed the things to be done to protect liver health.

1. Eat a Mediterranean diet, avoid fatty foods and fatty meals, eat less saturated fat and more plant-based foods.
2. Maintain your ideal weight. If you are overweight, losing even 7 percent to 10 percent of your weight will reduce the risk of fatty liver and even to some extent take away any liver stiffness and scarring that may develop.
3. Drink two cups of coffee a day.
4. Exercise in your life - exercise reduces the risk of liver disease.
5. Practice good hygiene against infectious diseases and wash your hands frequently.
6. Get tested for hepatitis B and C. Viral hepatitis B and C should be tested.
7. Get vaccinated against hepatitis A and B.
8. Use medicines wisely. Tell your doctor about any changes in your symptoms, including medicines.
9. Maintain normal levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar within a healthy range.
10. Make sure to use hygienic equipment. If you are planning any treatment, work with a licensed practitioner using properly cleaned equipment.
